By Mary Shackelton, MPH ND A new study says the gene could increase some people's risk of becoming dangerously overweight by 70% and raising their consequent chance of developing Diabetes by 50%. The study, by geneticists from Oxford University and the Peninsula Medical School in Britain, could eventually lead to new ways of approaching the condition that blights the health of millions. The findings may also help explain why some people find it harder to lose weight than others. The researchers spent 15 years analyzing the DNA and health of more than 40,000 adults and children before pinpointing a gene called FTO which plays a key role in obesity. Professor Graham Hitman, of Queen Mary's School of Medicine in London, said: "We live in a blame culture, in which, when people gain weight, it is entirely their fault. This exciting research confirms, that while improving lifestyle is still the key, some people will find it harder to change their weight than others." Experts have warned that an entire generation faces an old age blighted by heart disease, cancer, Diabetes and other diseases brought on by obesity. The research, reported in the journal Science, pinpointed a flawed version of the FTO gene. It is the first time a specific gene has been linked to obesity. As genes come in pairs, the people at greatest risk are those who carry two flawed versions of FTO. They are around 7 pounds heavier than average. Those who have inherited just one flawed gene are 30% more likely to be obese and 25% more likely to develop Diabetes than those who have two normal copies. The scientists said the flawed gene affects the weight of both adults and children, with its influence kicking in by the age of seven. But they do not know yet how it affects the body. Then you will divide your weight number by your height number. That is your BMI. For example, if your weight were 150 pounds x 703, your weight answer would be 105,450. If your height is 54, that would be 64 inches x 64 for a total of 4,096. Taking the 105,450 divided by 4,096, you come out with a BMI of 25.7. There are other ways to measure your body fat percentage but this will give you a quick idea of where you are at. Peer Pressure- Decisions That We Make In Unprepared Times

Yet you went out and did it, so that you could be a part of that group. Did you feel right about it, was it worth the effort? We have all gone through some form of Peer Pressure in our lives. Is Peer Pressure bad or good? Peer Pressure is the pressure to do certain things, to act in a particular way, and to look like you belong to a specific group. It is an influence to fit into a particular lifestyle. Depending on the type of influence Peer Pressure can be good or it can be bad. When someone is encouraging and supportive and is trying to influence you to do the right thing, where it will improve you and not harm you or others, then it is a good thing. On the other hand when you are encouraged to do wrong things, then it is bad. How do we help our children to deal with Peer Pressure? Better still, we as adults also have to deal with this issue, what is the best way to go about it? We have to decide what we let influence our lives and what is good for our families. From a family point of view we need to keep the communication channels open and talk to our young people and discuss important issues and how to deal with these issues when they come up. Then the children will have a standard to apply to the Peer Pressure that is being applied to them. Strong beliefs help and are an advantage. Knowing what is good and right will give a clear direction to act and not desire to choose the wrong action. From a Religious view the key is to always put Godly principles first then other influences will have the right perspective. I for one have encouraged young people to know what is right and wrong, and if it does not feel good when you think about it, Dont Do It! While teaching a class of ten year old children, we had a role play where the kids in the groups applied pressure to one child to act out a specific role to be a part of a Cool group. They had to perform an act like stealing a mars bar from the local shop. The children wanted to belong to the group so much that they did not think about the implications of their actions. In the heat of the excitement, the children were confused and were unsure, but due to the encouragement and egging on from their peers the children went through with the deed. It was only in the debrief the children realised what they did was wrong. After that the children decided that it was wrong to steal and they would not do it to just belong to a Cool group. Since that role play the children have encountered other pressures and they have been prepared to act on their beliefs by doing the right things and not reacting to Peer Pressure.
Understanding and knowing the moral values helps people and children deal with peer group pressures. Encouraging peer group pressure can be helpful. It helps to improve self worth, confidence, outlook, and further develop meaningful friendships. Comments that inspire others to achieve and to complete the allotted task are very positive and they do make a difference to the person who is being encouraged. Praise is wonderful, and it is one of the great positive Peer Pressures available to all groups. More people need to use it. The results from this one little sincere act of admiration can move mountains. Peer Pressure is only a problem when the person that it is applied to is unprepared to deal with it. Children who understand and know what is right and wrong are more able to react to Peer Pressure in the right manner. Tell your child if others ask you to do something wrong, and it feels wrong then Dont Do It. First Date Tips for Guys

There are a lot of ways to really knock a girl's socks off on the first date, but without having the basics covered first, you'll strike out. Fast. So whether this is a first date from an online dating service, a blind date set up by a friend or relative, or the first date with someone you've actually met and talked to before, there are some important do's and don'ts to keep in mind. 1. Dress nicely. Women expect this to be a no-brainer but it doesn't always occur to guys. They see nothing wrong with going straight from working on the car or planting trees, to their date... without even washing up or changing. Now along the same lines, you want to be sure you dress appropriately for the date. There's not much use in putting on a tuxedo if you're planning on going out for coffee or a movie. Likewise though, don't wear jeans and a t-shirt if you're planning to take your date to a fancy french restaurant. 2. Groom well. Grooming is your basic cleanup, and it usually goes hand in hand with putting on some nice clothes. Guys forget some basic things though, so in addition to taking a shower and putting on fresh deodorant and cologne, be sure to trim your nails, clean out any dirt from under the fingernails, and shave or trim your face. 3. Meet in a public place. This is very important for blind dates, or first dates with online friends. Women are taught to be very careful and cautious with men, so they're not likely to be comfortable having you pick them up at their house or apartment. They also aren't usually comfortable meeting in secluded or out-of-the-way places either. So to make sure they're comfortable, arrange your first meeting somewhere public. Roses equate to romance in a woman's mind. Giving her one rose on the first date is usually ok and actually sweet, but if you want to play it really safe try giving her a pretty carnation or lily instead. Chocolates are loved by women but sometimes this can backfire. If the woman you're meeting is on a diet, or overly self conscious about her weight, the chocolates may not be the best idea. So only give these as a first date gift when you know something about the woman you're dating. If you're not sure, leave those for future dates instead. 5. Don't Go Overboard. When taking a lady out on a first date, it's not always a good idea to plan something overly fancy or expensive. Women tend to criticize themselves a lot more than men do, and often they're more uncertain of themselves too. So if you take her to a super fancy expensive restaurant, she may worry that her dress isn't good enough, or she may end up wearing shoes that she can barely walk in because she felt they were the only ones good enough for such an elaborate date. If they woman you're dating is used to super expensive five star restaurants then you aren't likely to have any problems. If however, she says she's "always wanted to try one", then that's not the best choice for your first date with her... no matter how romantic it might seem.
